It’s also a reminder of how far medical innovation has come, especially as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to redefine how we approach health and wellness.

Interestingly, my own curiosity about diabetes began unexpectedly, while watching Love is Blind. A contestant spoke about their father and child living with diabetes, and that heartfelt moment sparked a personal interest to learn more. It was a subtle but powerful reminder that awareness often starts in the most ordinary ways. As the saying goes, ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge empowers, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to learn.

In that spirit, Roche has announced the launch of its Accu-Chek SmartGuide® Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) solution in South Africa, a first-of-its-kind innovation powered by AI. The device provides real-time, 14-day glucose monitoring and uses AI-enabled algorithms to predict glucose levels up to two hours ahead, including overnight. This allows users to take proactive steps before glucose fluctuations occur, offering both safety and peace of mind.

With more than 4.2 million South Africans currently living with diabetes, the introduction of this AI-powered solution represents a significant step forward in local healthcare.
