How to Get Ready for the Festive Season with Baby in Tow (South Africa Edition)

The festive season is almost here, and I can already feel the excitement in the air. Shops are sparkling with tinsel and fairy lights, families are swapping holiday plans, and there’s that unmistakable December buzz that makes South Africa come alive.

This year feels different though, it’s my second festive season with a baby in tow but this time around baby is more active and alert. As much as I love the idea of holiday getaways and Christmas travel, the reality is that babies come with extra planning. From sleep schedules to packing baby essentials, celebrating with little ones can feel overwhelming.

Still, I don’t want to miss out on the festive magic. So instead of stressing, I’ve been exploring baby-friendly holiday ideas that allow me to celebrate without the overwhelm. Luckily, South Africa has some amazing options that are perfect for families with little ones.

Baby-Friendly Holiday Destinations Worth Considering:

Cape Town & Surrounds:

Perfect for a seaside break with family-friendly beaches like Fish Hoek and St James. Plus, self-catering Airbnbs make it easy to keep baby’s routine on track.

Durban & North Coast;

Warm water, gentle waves, and resorts like Umhlanga or Zimbali that are built with families in mind.

Garden Route:

Think Knysna, Wilderness, or Plettenberg Bay. Peaceful, nature-rich, and ideal for slowing down with a baby in tow.

Drakensberg;

Mountain views, crisp air, and quiet moments. Many lodges here cater for families and even offer babysitting if you need a breather.

Malaria-Free Safaris

Pilanesberg or Madikwe are great for a touch of adventure without the health worries. Some lodges even offer nanny services so parents can sneak in a game drive.

Close-to-Home Stays

Sometimes the best holidays are just an hour away. A cozy farm stay or countryside retreat gives you that festive reset without long travel stress.

My Festive Mindset:

This year, I’m embracing the idea that festive doesn’t have to mean “far.” Whether it’s a short getaway, a cozy braai with family, or just creating magical moments at home, what matters most is being present. Baby’s first festive season doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be filled with love, laughter, and those little traditions we’ll look back on for years.

Because at the end of the day, festive magic isn’t about where you are, it’s about who you’re with. And this year, I’m exactly where I need to be.
