A Century of Disney Magic Comes to Johannesburg: Dare to Dream JR. Lands at NCT

If you grew up belting out “Let It Go” in the shower or dreaming of a “Friend Like Me,” get ready — because this September, those songs are coming to life on a Johannesburg stage, sung by the very generation that inherited them.

The National Children’s Theatre (NCT) has announced the South African premiere of Disney’s Dare to Dream JR., running 30 September to 11 October 2026 at NCT’s Parktown home. It’s a milestone moment for local theatre lovers: the first time this Disney Theatrical Group musical revue — created to mark a century of Disney music — will be staged in South Africa.

What Exactly Is Dare to Dream JR.?

Think of it less as a traditional story and more as a love letter to a hundred years of Disney soundtrack history. The show follows a group of teenage “Junior Imagineers” on their first day at Walt Disney’s famous Imagineering Studios, where they discover — through music — what it really means to dream, connect, and grow.

There’s no single hero, no villain, and no fairytale romance driving the plot. Instead, fifteen young performers aged 13 to 18 carry the entire 60-minute production, proving along the way that the songs audiences grew up with still hit just as hard live, sung by kids their own age.

The Soundtrack You Already Know By Heart:

Even if South African audiences haven’t heard of the show itself, they’ll recognise every note. The setlist spans generations of Disney classics and modern hits alike, including:

  • When You Wish Upon a Star
  • Be Our Guest
  • Hakuna Matata
  • The Bare Necessities
  • Let It Go
  • You’ve Got a Friend in Me
  • Part of Your World
  • How Far I’ll Go
  • Friend Like Me
  • Surface Pressure
  • Try Everything
  • Remember Me
  • Go the Distance
  • I Just Can’t Wait to Be King

Director Ivor Jones sums up the appeal simply: the production’s job is just to remind audiences why they already love every song in it.

More Than a Singalong:

Beneath the nostalgia, Dare to Dream JR. is built around a handful of themes that speak directly to its young cast — and its young audience:

  • Dreaming big, no matter the size or shape of the dream
  • Believing in yourself, anchored by a central trainee who has to find her own courage
  • Teamwork, since the Junior Imagineers only get anywhere by lifting each other up
  • Perseverance, with an honest nod to how much effort big dreams actually take
  • Letting dreams evolve, giving kids permission to become someone different than they first imagined
  • Creativity, celebrated as something every child already carries inside them

NCT’s COO, Belinda Germeshuizen, put it best: watching these songs performed live by young learners their own age shifts something in the audience — it helps kids believe the stage might be theirs too.

Why This Matters for Gauteng’s Young Audiences:

This premiere builds on NCT’s ongoing relationship with Disney Theatrical Group, the same partnership that brought The Lion King JR. to South African stages in 2024–25, with a return planned for 2026.

For NCT, it’s part of a bigger mission. As trustee Andrea Katz notes, theatre at NCT isn’t a luxury — it’s a safe space and a life-changing experience, one that opens something up in a child the moment they hear a song like “Hakuna Matata” performed live for the first time.
